Child abuse and maltreatment is not limited to a particular age and can occur in the infant, toddler, preschool, and school-age years. Choose one of the four age groups (infant, toddler, preschool, or school age) and discuss the types of abuse that are most often seen in this age. Discuss warning signs and physical and emotional assessment findings the nurse may see that could indicate child abuse. Discuss cultural variations of health practices that can be misidentified as child abuse. Nonetheless, healthcare professionals must look out for warning signs. Some red flags may be raised as early as the babyâ⠂¬â„¢s birth. For example, poor mother-infant bonding from birth has been identified as a high risk for possible abuse later on and â€Å"may be caused by the delivery of a preterm infant, multiple infants, or one with a disability who has a prolonged stay in the hospital† (Lyden, 2011, p. 2). In the cases of inflicted brain trauma, abuse can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because the baby may not have any external marks, other than bruises on chest and extremities from where the infant was held (Lyden, 2011). Researchers say that retinal hemorrhages in infant’s eyes should be considered as signs of abuse until proven otherwise, although they acknowledge that retinal bleeding in infants can be caused by other conditions, those conditions can be ruled out through history, physical exam, and labs (Lyden, 2011). Child abuse crosses all ethnic racial, cultural, and socioeconomic lines. According to Ramen Hodes (2012), in today’s multicultural society, healthcare professionals are often faced with the challenge of â€Å"exploring and resolving the tension between definitions of harm in child protection practice and various cultural and child-rearing practices† (p. 30). To them their ac tion is normal based on their cultural believe. (Mclntyre et al 1992) The American middle-class culture is one of the few that uses positive reinforcement procedures while limiting punishment when deemed necessary, a mild, spanking may be administered, although a more frequent practice is to isolate the misbehaving child, withdrawing love and affection for a period of time (Mclntyre et al 1992). These majority culture parents perceive their methods as being more humane than those that incorporate physical punishment. However, other cultural/ethnic groups often view the dominant culture style as being crueler. (Mclntyre et al 1992). Hsm/230 Week 9 Checkpoint Free Essays

Capstone Checkpoint week 9 HSM/230 Capstone Checkpoint week 9 Many issues are becoming problems for seniors, one of these issues is the possibility of losing one of the most important assistance programs that human services has to offer, the Medicare and Medicaid assistance programs for health and well-being of the seniors in California. This issue has been relevant for many years; however in recent years the California Legislature has been unable to successfully plan a budget that would be considered sound. Thus, at this point the legislature is considering cutting some of the programs of human services or cutting back on the funding to these programs. We will write a custom essay sample on Hsm/230 Week 9 Checkpoint or any similar topic only for you Order Now According to Diane Rowland ScD. and Barbara Lyons, PhD. (1996). Without Medicaid’s assistance, the cost of basic medical care can impede access to care and erode financial security for low income elderly people. This is now a problem, for example my mother has a social security benefit of 650. 00 a month, and if she had to pay her medical care and prescription out of this income, her income would only be 300. 00 a month. This is more than twice the poverty level today. This is of great concern to human services agencies in the United States. Most of the elderly have paid into these programs for many years, expecting assistance as they retired; however, this is eroding away. In order to rectify this issue, California along with other states facing this issue, needs to come up with a balanced budget that does not exceed the income they are receiving at the time of the budget making process. The legislature cannot â€Å"expect† to make a different amount than what is in black and white. To predict that they would be making a larger amount only makes the budget worthless, a budget would need to be accurate and overspending must stop in order to rectify this situation. If I were in charge of this type of program, I would look into privatization of a portion and look for subordinates that would be willing to donate, or fund this program for the poor elderly of the United States. Also I would look into how many actually are citizens that are receiving this benefit without payment into the program. This is a huge issue, many illegal immigrants are receiving these benefits and have never paid into the program, therefore are actually ineligible for the benefit. I would propose that these recipients be placed on the welfare program for illegal immigrants and taken off of the assistance for the poor elderly clientele. Is this ethical, I think so, I do not think it is ethical for one to receive benefits if they have not met the criteria or prerequisite to receive this benefit. General Hospital free essay sample

Finally, a strategy for Hammer to resolve the problem will be recommended. Cost control and management/physician agreement are the main conflicts at General Hospital. In order for cost to be reduced General Hospitals CEO, Mike Hammer, will need to gain the support of the physicians on staff. So far Hammer has been unsuccessful in his past two attempts to control physician-driven cost: First when, he had tried to convince Director of Medicine Dr. Mark Williams to get the staff physicians to become cost sensitive in their decision making. Even when Hammer spotted a wasteful practice, physicians defended their actions as the practice of good medicine. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. We will write a custom essay sample on General Hospital or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 546) Hammers second attempt was when he hired a consultant that made recommendations for a formal comprehensive cost containment program which was not supported by the hospital board of trustees because the director of medicine opposed it. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. 546) Somehow, Hammer and the physicians at General Hospital will have to work together as one to reach their cost reduction goals so that they may expand and remain competitive in the industry. The conflict management styles that are evident in the case are the Forcing and Avoidance Styles. The forcing style refers to assertive and uncooperative behaviors and represents a win-lose approach to interpersonal conflict. Those who use this forcing approach try to achieve their own goals with out concern for others. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. 392) In the meeting that Hammer has with Marge Harding (the new COO), he advises he to select something that the physicians can do at less cost and implement the change ith no questions asked including terminations of at will employees. This allows Harding free reign to do whatever she wants without consulting anyone if she doesnt feel it necessary. Because of this Harding uses bad Judgment when deciding to terminate attending Cardiologist Dr. James Boyle and replace him with computerized EKG interpretations. Dr. Boyle was respected by his peers, provided accurate and timely reports, never missed work, and always made arrangements for replace ments when on vacation, which shows he was committed to his career and patients. Harding implements a computerized system without any testing or advanced notice, has her assistant Oohn Will) introduce the system to the physicians and staff and then goes on vacation. The EKG system. The avoiding style refers to unassertive and uncooperative behaviors. A person uses this style to stay away from conflict, ignore disagreements, or remain neutral. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. 394) During the first week there were several problems with the computerized operations such as: late reports, mis- filings, wrong patients EKG analysis, and misdiagnoses. These problems could incur further cost for the hospital and possibly lawsuits. The physicians are upset because Dr. Boyle has been terminate and he always provide accurate EKG reports and the new system is faulty, so the take their complains to the Director of medicine, Dr. Williams. Dr. Williams called a meeting with the medical staff and requested Harding to attend which she avoided. Instead Harding sent John Will with a message: General Hospital needs to stay abreast of ongoing technological developments in science and medicine, especially when costs are reduced. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. 547) Harding is staying away from the conflict by refusing to attend the meeting and sending the message through her assistant John Will. Discuss how General Hospital could have used teams to address the cost reductions needed to stay competitive. Teams can be sed to negotiate salaries of all staff, infrastructure maintenance, new technology, medicinal and other financial needs. Staffing (can and some a few nurses) can be reduced in some areas since the numbers of beds being used have been greatly reduced. Forming relationships with other medical center or specialized physicians to come in on a contract/ on call basis would also be cost effective in slow periods. Teams are able to brain storm to come up with ideas together and then put them into action as they are agreed upon as a common goal. Describe how Hammer can use negotiation skills to get buy-in for the cost reductions. The negotiation skills are very important to reach the desired goals of cost reduction and conflict resolution at General Hospital. Instead of Hammer using the Distributive Negotiation Strategy (good cop bad cop) which is a win- lose situation he should use a Collaborative Strategy. The Collaborating style refers to high levels of cooperative and assertive behaviors. (Hellriegel Slocum, pp. 391) Hammer needs to gain the physicians trust and let them know that this is a win-win situation. Todo this he must have involve them from start to finish initiate meetings, ask for their thoughts for cost cutting echniques, let them know that this is vital to the survival of the hospital as a whole and that he need and values their input. These meetings will bring about suggestions from the physicians, nurses, directors, and non- medical management. Together they can work as a team and take the selected ideas and begin implementing on a trial basis to find out which plans are a good fit for the organization as a whole.

To Kill A Mockingbird Racism Essays - To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird: Racism To Kill a Mockingbird: Racism In Harper Lee's book, To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many examples of racism. During this time in history racism was acceptable. Racism is a key theme in her book. Not only those who were black, but also those who affiliated with blacks, were considered inferior. Atticus, a lawyer, who defended blacks in court, was mocked. An example of this is when Mrs. Dubose said, "Your father's [Atticus] no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Mr. Dolphus Raymond was also criticized for affiliating with blacks, especially black females. Example is when Jem said, "He likes ?em [blacks] better ?n he likes us [whites], I reckon." Basically, you were black if you "liked" blacks. Blacks, because they were considered inferior, were expected to do everything for whites. Everything had to be perfect, without excuse. Even when Calpurnia, a Finch family friend, did not make the perfect cup of coffee, she was mocked. Book excerpt, "She [Calpurnia] poured one tablespoon of coffee into it and filled the cup to the brim with milk. I [Scout] thanked her by sticking out my tongue...". Even when blacks did do good, they were still mocked. An example is when Aunt Alexandra said, "Jem's growing up now and you are too. We decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence." Even though Calpurnia was a female, Aunt Alexandra over-looked this, because of her race. People were so biased, it didn't matter how good a job a black person did. Since there was such strong racism in Maycomb, there were excuses made for whites. In the book, it was obvious that Bob Ewell was a mean man. It was also obvious that he was abusive to his daughter, Mayella, and he was the one who violated her, not Tom Robinson, because what the evidence showed. But, the people of Maycomb over-looked the evidence in favor of Tom Robinson, just because he was black. In Harper Lee's book, To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many examples of racism. The legal barriers to racial equality have been torn down, and racial exclusion from the benefits of society and the rights of citizenship is no longer nearly total, as it once was. But discrimination still limits the opportunities and stifles the hopes of many black Americans and other minorities. In the realms of housing, employment, medical care, education and the administration of the criminal justice system, we are still, as the 1968 Kerner Commission Report on civil disorders warned, "two separate Americas." At this moment in our nation's history, it is critical that we move definitively forward in remedying the effects of discrimination. But tragically, the most successful civil rights remedies have come under attack from conservative politicians and pundits. Affirmative action, for example, which is to be credited with the creation of an increasingly diverse workforce, has come under intense criticism. Voting rights laws, which have begun to integrate the halls of Congress and state legislatures, are also under attack. As long as our society is ridden with race-based problems, we will need race-based remedies. And while we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.

Animal Testing is Wrong Essay Example for Free

Animal Testing is Wrong Essay Animal testing is cruel and inhuman! It is morally wrong to toture animals for our own benefit. Over 3 million animals have been tormented all in the name of research. It has been found that only 5-25% of side effects caused by medicines are accurately predicted. This leads me to wonder what is actually being gained by animal experimentation. It’s bad science! The Food and Drug Administration reported that 92 out of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail on humans, making it wasteful. In recent years there has been the recognition that animals rarely serve as good models for the human body. Animal experiments prolong the suffering of people waiting for effective cures by misleading experimenters and squandering precious money, time, and resources that could have been spent on human-relevant research. â€Å"In the name of science†, animal experiments globally are around 100 million experiments each year. Cats, dogs, rabbits, mice and other animals, no different to those we have as pets, are used in experiments. Animals are force-fed harmful substances, infected with lethal viruses, subjected to brain damage, heart attacks, stokes, cancers and ultimately killed. Several cosmetic tests commonly performed on mice, rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs include:skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed on shaved skin or dripped into the eyes without any pain relief. repeated force-feeding studies that last weeks or months, to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards. widely condemned â€Å"lethal dose† tests, where animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine what dose causes death. The fact that animals are used to study pain, depression, anxiety, and to test pain-killing drugs for human use, demonstrates that scientists recognize that animals are capable of suffering in many ways just like humans, but these sentient animals are unable to give their consent to participate in research. The fact that animals can suffer and experience pain is sufficient reason to refrain on moral grounds from harming them. Beyond pain, there is also persuasive evidence that animals, in particular mammals and birds, have thoughts, intentions, and memories. This means they can be harmed by confinement, frustration, fear, isolation, and loss of life – experiences unavoidable for animals confined in Laboratories and used in experiments. The measurement of stress hormones, and presence of ulcers, immune suppression, abnormal behavior and brain dysfunction in laboratory animals, provide further evidence that animals commonly used in labs do suffer pain and distress. Some people claim that because animals do not have duties or responsibilities in the way humans do, they are not deserving of the same protection. However, some humans have no responsibilities or duties, such as babies, the mentally ill, or very infirm, yet they are not stripped of their rights in this way. Indeed, such individuals are usually considered more deserving of protection, not less. Others argue that the potential benefit to human society justifies experiments on animals. However this argument is a slippery slope, as this reasoning would also justify experiments on a few non-consenting humans for the ultimate benefit of human society — a clearly unethical scenario. â€Å"If we didn’t use animals, we’d have to test new drugs on people. † The fact is that we already do test new drugs on people. No matter how many animal tests are undertaken, someone will always be the first human to be tested on. Because animal tests are so unreliable, they make those human trials all the more risky. What I have to wonder is why do we test on animals, or feel the need to have people volunteer for something potential dangerous with its unknown side effects when we have child molesters, rapists, and murderers in prison who are catered to three meals a day? I believe we should enact instead of animal testing, (which has been proven to be highly ineffective) testing on convicted criminals on death row, or prisoners looking to cut down some time in exchange for experimentation and observation. Animal Testing is Wrong. (2018, Nov 03).

Violence to women is another factor meddling with the improvement of women. When we talk of violence, it might be in the form sexual harassment, discrimination in the living circle and working place, restrictions imposed either by the family members, lack of safety in places where people are moderate in numbers etc. This has probably leaded to the growth of Battered Women’s Shelter and Victim Support Groups.
